Dead-end membrane distillation with localized interfacial heating for sustainable and energy-efficient desalination

چکیده

Membrane distillation (MD) has the high potential to circumvent conventional desalination limitations in treating highly saline brines. However, performance of MD is limited by its low thermal efficiencyand temperature polarization (TP) effect. Consequently, driving force decreases when heat loss increases. In this study, we propose minimize TP through localized heating where thin feed channel was heated uniformly at membrane-liquid interface without changing properties membrane. This concept further improved implementing a new dead-end configuration. Investigated for first time, this configuration eliminated circulation losses, which cannot be realized due rapid stratification. In addition, accumulation foulants on membrane surface successfully controlled intermittent flushing. 3-Dimensional conjugate transfer modeling revealedmore uniform and gradient across increased water over larger area. The increase vapor flux (45%) reduction lossobserved led decrease specific energy consumption 57%, corresponding gain output ratio about 132 %, compared bulk heating, while preserving integrity. A model deployed ANSYS-Fluent framework elucidate mechanism enhancement associated with proposed technique. This study provides future sustainable developmentby maintaining stable minimizing consumption.

Water Desalination by Membrane Distillation

Water is the most common substance in the world, however, 97% is seawater and only 3% is fresh water. The availability of water for human consumption is decreasing due to increasing the environmental pollution. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 2.4 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation facilities, and more than one billion people do not have access to safe ...

Advances in Membrane Distillation for Water Desalination and Purification Applications

Membrane distillation is a process that utilizes differences in vapor pressure to permeate water through a macro-porous membrane and reject other non-volatile constituents present in the influent water. This review considers the fundamental heat and mass transfer processes in membrane distillation, recent advances in membrane technology, module configurations, and the applications and economics...

Preliminary Evaluation for Vacuum Membrane Distillation (VMD) Energy Requirement

The energy requirement of vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) with or without recirculation was modelled using both experimental results and theoretical data. The trends are generally consistent between the theoretical and experimental data. Thermal energy contributes the most to the total energy required for the VMD process. To lower the thermal energy cost, waste heat resource and heat recover...
